A Brief History of Camp FIre and Camp Niwana

Camp Fire USA, the organization that owns Camp Niwana, has a rich and storied history that dates back over a century. Camp Fire was founded in 1910 by Luther and Charlotte Gulick, as the first non-sectarian organization created for girls in the United States. Charlotte and Luther believed in providing young women with the same opportunities for outdoor adventure and personal growth that were available to young men at the time. So, when Camp Niwana was founded in 1952, it started as a camp exclusively for girls.

In the early years, Camp Fire Girls offered camping trips, hikes, and other outdoor activities designed to help girls build confidence and independence. The girls at Camp Niwana were involved in community service projects throughout the east texas region and encouraged young girls to take on leadership roles in their communities.

As the years went on, Camp Fire Girls began to expand and evolve. In the 1970s, the organization officially changed its name to Camp Fire Boys and Girls and for the first time, boys were also allowed at Camp Niwana. Today, Camp Fire USA is a co-ed organization that serves youth of all genders and backgrounds.

Throughout its history, Camp Fire USA has remained committed to its mission of helping young people develop their full potential. The organization offers a wide range of programs and activities, including summer camps, after-school programs, and leadership development opportunities.

At Camp Niwana, these values are put into practice every day. The camp's focus on community, personal growth, and outdoor adventure aligns perfectly with the Camp Fire USA mission. Campers at Camp Niwana have the opportunity to connect with nature, make new friends, and develop their leadership skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Through its commitment to youth development and outdoor education, Camp Fire USA has had a lasting impact on generations of young people. At Camp Niwana, the organization's values and legacy continue to thrive, providing an unforgettable experience for campers from all walks of life.
